The Lower Gate Tower
Krapkowice's town walls were built in the 14th century and were an integral part of Krapkowice's urban development until 1829. In the 19th century the growing town needed more and more space. Therefore, between 1840 and 1860 it was decided to level the town moat and demolish two of the three remaining town gates.
The Odra Gate, otherwise known as the Lower Gate, derives its name from the direction of the road leading directly to the Odra River and was the lowest gate in Krapkowice. Built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries it served as a defence tower, an entrance gate and a prison gate. In its shape it resembled the tower of the Upper Gate, which still stands in Krapkowice today in Basztowa Street.
The tower of the Lower Gate was topped with a crenellation and, as with all town fortifications, limestone was used in its construction.
